The Importance of Beauty Sleep

Updated: Nov 16, 2019

When our schedule gets incredibly busy (with our jobs, stress, activities, studies, errands, kids, etc.) one important part of our daily routine suffers.

Sometimes we have so many things to do, in so little time, that unfortunately, we often choose to cut on sleep — which is never a good thing. No matter how hard or how hectic our schedule is, here’s why getting our eight-hour beauty sleep is important.

The Science of Beauty Sleep

Your body (skin included), goes into ‘repair and replenish’ mode while you sleep, therefore the number of hours are critical for that process to take place adequately. Sleep reduces cortisol (a stress hormone) and increases melatonin (an antioxidant), which helps promote cellular turnover to improve skin texture and tone.

Not only is getting extra Z’s a necessity to accelerate the natural regeneration process, but it is also the perfect time for in-bed face and hair masks to rejuvenate overnight. A good night’s sleep really does aid in beautiful skin because nighttime hydration plays a crucial role in keeping it healthy, radiant, and youthful. During the day, our skin works hard to protect itself from constant attacks, so sleeping also helps recover from daily environmental aggressions. In fact, during the night, the regeneration process can be up to three times faster than during the day, mostly because of HGH, the human growth hormone responsible for accelerating skin repair and cell regeneration. Between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., our cell production can double, especially in a deep sleep, cell turnover increases by three times between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The flip side is that you will also lose moisture during sleep, more specifically during the end of your sleeping cycle between 6 to 9 a.m. Transepidermal water loss through the skin is at its highest and unfortunately skin is now at its driest and the barrier can be impaired. When waking up and exposed to light, the cortisol increases, DNA repair is less active and skin is more susceptible to damage from UV light and can appear red or inflamed.

Rejuvenating Overnight

While the skin is more prone to losing moisture and becoming dehydrated during the night, it is also more apt to absorb skin care during that time. Nighttime creams, treatments and overnight masks can, not only deeply moisturize, but also help stimulate the skin’s self-defence mechanism and boost its own natural antioxidant systems.

A few ingredients like hyaluronic acid (that draws in moisture as you sleep), retinol and Vitamin C & E ( for their regenerative properties) are especially great for nighttime skin care as they will stay active on your skin longer than they do during the day.

One of the best nighttime serums out there, Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, is proven to dramatically reduce all key signs of visible aging by maximizing the power of skin’s natural nighttime renewal with the exclusive ChronoluxCB™ technology to reveal a smoother, more radiant, hydrated, younger look by the morning.

Wake up with plump, smooth, radiant, and retexturised skin by using Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Night Cream. This powerful formula contains Winter Daphne Stem Cell Extract, Time-released Retinol, Red Algae Marigel, BioNymph Peptide, Olus Oil, Frangipani and Vitamin E. This cream will moisturize, nourish, and stimulate collagen to protect the skin from environmental and aging damage while creating a firmer and younger-looking complexion. A little goes a long way with this product, so a pea-sized amount is more than enough for your entire face.

Reveal a softer, fresher, more radiant complexion overnight with this ultra-lightweight sleeping mask that delivers eight hours of continuous hydration. The Hydra Life Jelly Sleeping Mask by Dior smooths, fully hydrates and plumps up the skin so that it looks like you got a full night’s rest.

HAIR CARE

At night hair is undisturbed by all of the stressors of our daily routine, so beneficial ingredients can truly be absorbed into the hair and give you the best results. Use a silk pillowcase to prevent the hair cuticle from being roughed up. It will also allow you to wake up to less frizzy hair and with fewer tangles.

Products like Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Night Cap Overnight Perfector (which is a weightless, fast-absorbing treatment) delivers hair that is more manageable, shinier, and healthier for up to five shampoos. Apply it on dry hair at bedtime and wake up the next morning with healthier locks (with no need to rinse it out).

For all its benefits, to me, a good night sleep is pure luxury and the most important step of my beauty routine.
